According to the SHRM Research Institute's latest study, Better Workplaces on a Budget, after compensation 61% of respondents said lack of career development and advancement was a top three cause of employee turnover at their organizations. Additionally, 21% said it was their top reason for turnover. While these findings are not surprising, many small to mid-sized employers lack the knowledge or actionable strategies for addressing this turnover issue.

There are a host of tactics and strategies for addressing employee development and advancement, and they all begin with Managers being held accountable for the development of their employees. Once Managers actively work on developing their direct reports, increasing internal promotions and publicizing these advancements throughout the organization so that others can see that there are indeed advancement opportunities at the company can be pursued.
